8K Course Information
Big Timber XC Challenge, Course Information
- 2 perimeter loops (+ entry onto & exit off the perimeter) = approximately 5 miles (or “5-ish miles”)
- We are in the process of cutting completely new trails in some portions of the course specifically for this entry and your running enjoyment. As a result, please understand the course may not be an exact 8k/4.96m (but we will make it as close to that as the landscape allows).
- It is your responsibility to know the course and stay on it.
- There are NO water stations out on the course. Runners should plan on carrying their own water or relying on a hand-off from a family member or friend while out on the course.
- LEAVE NO TRACE other than your footprints on the course! Please do NOT drop any clothing, water/fluid bottles, nutrition pouches/foils, candy/gum wrappers, or any other type of trash/debris. The Boy Scouts and the forest will appreciate your cooperation.
Course Description:
The name of this event is the BIG TIMBER XC CHALLENGE. You will be running over grass and wooded areas with natural elements such as uneven ground, small stones and other debris – if this frightens you, go find another asphalt road race to sign up for. You will be crossing through a knee-deep creek TWO times (if it has been raining a lot in the days before the race, it may be a little deeper), but there will be a rope to hold on to as you cross, if you need it.
Mile 1 -1.5: It will be a wide-open, cross-country type of start from under the big oak tree in Barn Field. Be sure to wave to your family or friends as you pass by and around the Dining Hall before working your way onto the perimeter path for the start of the first of two loops. Don’t be fooled by the relative ease of the route here on the east side of the property – you’ll only wish it was this comfortable once you’re over on the west side!
Mile 1.5-2.5: After bounding over a couple of wooden footbridges and a quick section of flat roadway, you’ll come to Trail’s End – inappropriately named, as this is where the real trail begins! A short downhill gives you momentum to work your way along the path under the trees. Cross a couple more footbridges and you’re on “the other side of the creek” (aka, “the dark side”). It doesn’t last long, though, before you blast THROUGH the creek (it’s knee deep), go up the wooden “stairs”, and eventually break out onto the roadway! Push the pace a bit around the bend, go past the BB Gun Shed, and attack the short uphill … you’re at the start of your second loop!
Mile 2.5-5-ish: The second time around the perimeter relives the experience … push it on the east side, survive the west side. Once you come up the short hill after the BB Gun Shed for the second time, you’ll be making a right turn to head back to the finish. Your family and friends may not recognize you as you pass by this second time, but hang in there – the finish looms just ahead under the big oak tree and pancakes await in the (warm) Dining Hall.
