Event Info
Come out and commemorate our American heroes during Memorial Day weekend with a run through the grassland and woods of Carl R Hansen Woods in northwest suburban Chicago! This new springtime event will give runners of all ages and abilities to shake off the running rust of winter on wide mowed grass pathways over rolling terrain and through groves of oak trees. The “Short” 4.25-mile distance is a single-loop route and is ideal for newbies to trail running, while the two-loop “Long” 7-mile distance will be perfect for those who want to stretch out their legs over a longer distance. And for those who want to run with a friend or family member, consider the 7 mile relay event, where each person runs one loop.
If we have a dry spring, the course will be wide and FAST … but if our spring is wet, expect to come to the finish wearing some mud (and who doesn’t like mud!??!).
DATE: Sunday, May 24, 8:00am start
LOCATION: Carl Hansen Forest Preserve, Sutton Rd/Rte 59, approximately 0.5 miles south of I-90 and 0.5 miles north of Golf Rd/Rte 58
DISTANCES:
- Short Individual 4.25 miles Green Trail from Start out to perimeter, ONE loop on Brown Trail, Green Trail back in to Finish
- Long Individual 7 miles Green Trail from Start out to perimeter, TWO loops on Brown Trail, Green Trail back in to Finish
- 2-Person Relay 7 miles Green Trail from Start out to perimeter, TWO loops on Brown Trail with hand-off between first and second loop, Green Trail back in to Finish
COURSE:
Existing wide mowed grass pathways around perimeter of preserve through small groves of trees, with mowed grass pathway out to and back in from perimeter loop. Course is primarily flat but does have some rolling terrain. Also, there are NOT a lot of rocks or roots, so this should be “novice friendly” for anyone new to trail running.
The Brown Trail perimeter loop is approximately 2.6 miles and the Green Trail segment out to and back in from the loop is approximately 0.81 miles (each way).
The relay exchange point would be at the beginning of the second loop (the intersection of loop and segment out to/back from loop.
