Our Mission:
Illinois Families for Hands & Voices is a parent-driven, non-profit organization that supports families with children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing without a bias around communication modes or methodologies.

Where we began…
Illinois Hands & Voices, legally known as Illinois Families for Hands & Voices was started by Karen Putz and a group of parents throughout the state of Illinois who felt that parent support was crucial to our families. Our chapter started in Summer of 2004.
Who Are We?
- We are families with children who are deaf and hard of hearing.
- We use many different types of communication modes: Auditory Verbal, Auditory Oral, Cued Speech, American Sign Language, Signed English, Simultaneous Communication and Total Communication.
- We are deaf and hard-of-hearing adults.
- We are professionals.
- We are from every corner of the state of Illinois.
- We are united, because we are Hands & Voices.
Families can learn about the variety of resources and options available to them and how to access them. Through this network of resources, families can make informed decisions about their future in regards to educational options, the changing landscape of assistive technologies, and many other issues facing families with children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing.
Families within the same geographic region within the state can share experiences and information as they support each other. They will be given the opportunity to gain knowledge and direction from families who have faced the same challenges and choices.
Race Information
Race will be held at Phillips Park - by the Aquatic Center. Plenty of free parking!
Raise $100 in donations for Illinois Hands & Voices and received two adult entries for the race!
New This Year!
Virtual Run! Can't join us on race day? No problem......run/walk wherever you would like! We will mail your shirt to you. You can complete the 5K any time between August 27 and August 29. Must be registered by August 24! Virtual participants are not eligible for award categories.
Kids Dash! All kids 8 and under can run in the kids dash. Entry is free and all kids receive a cape and a finisher ribbon! Kids race that it will be immediately following the 5k before awards.

How to participate virtually in our race!
Below are details on running our virtual race!
- Run anytime between August 27 and August 29, 2021.
- Choose your own course
- Most importantly….have fun and enjoy the time outside!
All virtual participants will receive a SuperHEARo Race shirt shipped to them. Must be registered by August 24!
Follow these easy steps to prepare for your tracking:
 TRACKING STEPS 1. Download the ASICS Runkeeper™ app to your phone and create an account or scroll down to log into an existing account Once you have completed your 5k distance in the app, save your workout and it will automatically post to Race Roster results. (This step must be followed from your mobile device) |
 VIEWING AND POSTING MANUAL RESULTS If you plan to record using another software or tracking device or post manually from what is recorded on your watch, simply head here and "Submit Virtual Result" between August 27 and August 29, 2021. |
FAQS:
- To record with tracking on the ASICS Runkeeper™ app, you will need to run or walk with your phone or with a connected wearable (see instructions below)
- You do not have to track with these technologies, it is optional!
