Johana Kariankei, Kenyan elite runner, will be running The R.A.C.E. Run!
The R.A.C.E. Run
Race for Awareness, Courage and Empowerment was born from the idea of a 13 year old girl, Fleur O'Connor.
In 2016, Fleur sponsored a young girl from Kenya to come experience life in Halifax and take home inspiration and empowerment to her home town of Iten, Kenya.
Through lots of fundraising and a family initiative, this dream became a reality. Dorothy Chepkonga arrived in Halifax in time to particpate in the inaugural R.A.C.E. Run. She experienced life in Canada with the support of the amazing Halifax community.
Over 140 participants came out to run, cheer and volunteer to make the first R.A.C.E. Run a huge success!
We are thrilled to be hosting year 2 of The R.A.C.E. Run with a new and exciting project. This year, Fleur's younger brother, Yale O'Connor, has decided to continue supporting children of Kenya. Through Johana Kariankei, an elite Kenyan runner and family friend, Yale became aware of a small village school in the town Johana grew up in. At this school the children's play ground (an open field) has been turned into farming land, leaving them nowhere to play soccer, run and train. Johana has decided to donate a piece of his own land to the school. In order to do this he will have to level the land, put in fencing and make it a safe place for children to play soccer and run.
Yale is truly inspired by what Johana is doing to support the Kenyan children and has decided to raise money to help prepare the land and to purchase and donate sporting equipement and running shoes in order for the children to enjoy their playing field.
Join us as a family or cheer on the runners in your family in an event that is sure to be a blast!
Support the idea that running is universal.
We have some race surprises in store, so register today!
