Athletics Canada Road Running Partner Session
Please join Athletics Canada, and our provincial/territorial branches and road running associations on Friday May 29, from 8am to 10am in the Nakiska room of the Calgary Westin hotel for a discussion of some important issues in Canadian road running.
Organizations attending the Race Directors' Summit interested in shaping national standards and elite hosting practices can join at no cost and will be enrolled in Athletics Canada's Supporter Program for 2015.
The supporter program provides the following benefits to races:
• Listing of your organization’s event(s) on the Athletics Canada and AC Road event calendars
• A monthly newsletter
• Access to the resources through Race Director’s portal
• Access to insurance at a preferred rates
• Access to preferred rates and discounts from Athletics Canada partners
• Free access to recordings of selected presentations from the 2015 Road Running Summit
• Ability to engage in national policy discussions and the design of road running programs and services offered by Athletics Canada
The discussion on May 29th will focus on how the road running community would like to come together to explore questions of national significance which may lead to opportunities for formal collaboration, as well the development of policies, guidelines and minimum standards and their eventual implementation. In addition to this broad framework, we will be specifically exploring the following topics:
National Standards
A number of races have expressed an interest in the development of national standards which provide a seal of quality to runners when engaging in an event. Athletics Canada is willing to play a leadership role in developing and administering these standards. During this discussion we will focus on the following topics:
• What should the scope of the standards be?
• How can standards be structured to be relevant to all kinds of races?
• How can standards be structured and promoted so as to be meaningful to runners?
• What is the best way to ensure standards are upheld?
Elite Road Running
A number of races have expressed an interest in developing/expanding the elite component of their races. At the same time, Athletics Canada is receiving increasing pressure to increase the number of events which are designated as championships and while this is a good avenue to increase visibility for specific events, if leading athletes are not present is it truly a championships? Or does it matter?
We must also recognize that the pool of elite athletes in Canada is limited, as are the number of domestic events in which an elite athlete can participate in and realistically expect to be in top form; however, the benefits of having elites present extends well beyond the elites running the race.
What is required for all to benefit from working together is to create a truly meaningful elite program. This is a complex challenge, which requires both a strong understanding of the various objectives and collaboration amongst races to provide a series of opportunities which are both meaningful and developmentally appropriate to elite athletes, while servicing the bigger picture objectives of local events. During this discussion we will focus on the following questions:
• What are we collectively trying to achieve for elite road runners in Canada?
• What are the strengths and weaknesses of current elite events and championships, as well as the opportunities and threats which may impact these opportunities moving forward?
• What are current best practices? What are the expectations/responsibilities of race organizers? What are the expectations/responsibilities of the athletes?
• How do we move the discussion forward? What are the next steps?
Top Canadian road runners Reid Coolsaet and Lanni Marchant will be in attendance to provide the elite athlete perspective on these questions.
Please indicate your interest as part of your registration.
