The 1st Annual Canoe and Du takes place on the beautiful La Crosse river and La Crosse River state trail along with the surrounding West Salem neighborhoods. This event is a great fit for all abilities and is family and beginner friendly. Test your abilities in open water paddling, road cycling, and running. Athletes can compete as individuals or as teams.

VOLUNTEER
Make a difference this summer and help support your community and local athletes at the 1st Anuual Canoe and Du. Help is needed on the run and bike course, directing participants where to go. Volunteers are also needed to help at the water and aid stations.

CANOE AND DU RACE INSTRUCTIONS

PLEASE READ THOUROUGHLY– There is no pre-race meeting. It is your responsibility to read/understand these instructions.

Packet Pick-Up: Racers can pick up race bibs , timing chips, and shirts during the following times.
- Wednesday 8/24 11:00am-1:00pm at the La Crosse YMCA (1140 Main Street, La Crosse, WI)
- Thursday 8/25 Times to be determined at Coulee Health (920 WI-16, West Salem, WI)
- Friday 8/26 Times to be determined

Check In:
Canoe Tri
Step 1: If using a YMCA supplied boat go directly to step 2. If supplying your own boat, you first deliver it to the canoe start area/boat landing located on highway 108 near Swarthout park. Canoe/kayak drop off will be available from 7:30am-8:30am
Step 2: Transition Area Check-in/ Gear Drop at Veterans Memorial Park, West Salem. Racers should report to check in tent. After checking in racers can place bike/gear in transition area.
Duathlon

Parking: Racers and spectators will park in the designated spaces at Veterans Memorial Park. Overflow parking will be in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Shuttles: Two Large shuttle busses will transport racers from the check-in and transition area to the canoe/kayak start between 8:00am-10:00am Spectators are allowed to board shuttle buses after all racers have been shuttled.
Start:
Canoe Tri
One boat will enter the water every 30 seconds. Boats will enter the water based on order of line-up. Boat placement holds a racer’s spot in line. Please stay with your boat so there are no issues regarding order. Be courteous and patient, you're racing the clock.
Duathlon
The Duathlon will start simultaneously with the Canoe Tri in Veterans Memorial Park at 9:00 am
Boat Course: Paddling is the first leg of the race. The boat course starts at the landing on the La Crosse River off of highway108 and ends at the landing near the transition area at Veterans Memorial Park. If using a YMCA supplied boat, grab rental boat, paddles, and life vest when you arrive at boat start. Racers using their own boat must supply own paddles and life vests. State law requires 1 life vest for each person on board. Be considerate of fellow racers and exit the river in the order you arrive. Race officials will help you out of the water and carry your boat to land. Please deposit your paddles and life-vests in your boat before heading to transition area. Teams will tag off with their biking member in the “relay zone” in the transition area. River bottom and banks may be muddy and a change of clothes after the paddling leg may be desirable.
Bike Course: Biking is the second leg of the race. Roads will be open to vehicles. Bikers must obey traffic laws. Bike helmets are required. Racers without helmets will be disqualified. Drafting is not allowed. Volunteers and officers will be posted at all major intersections. Stay alert to traffic and keep right. Racers must dismount your bike before crossing the timing platform. Teams will tag off with their running member in the “relay zone" in the transition area
Run Course: Running is the last leg of the race. The run course is an out and back from the transition area and on to La Crosse River State Trail
Duathlon: The duathlon will consist of 3 legs in the following order: Run, Bike, Run
Race Bibs: Timing and bib information to be added at later date
Restrooms: Portable toilets will be located at the boat start and in transition area
Water/aid stations: There will be water stations at the boat start, transition area, the turnaround on the run course, and one on the bike course
Food: information to be added at later date
Results: Paddle, Bike, Run, and transition times will be recorded by timing mats at the main transition area. Results will be posted periodically as racers finish the race and will also be available online following the race
Awards: The duathlon award ceremony will begin at 11:00 am. (pending on finish times) The Canoe Triathlon Award Ceremony will begin at 2:00 pm (pending on finish times) Awards will be given to the top 3 racers in each category.

Weather: If weather is questionable (thunder/lightning) we will wait for the “all clear” from local authorities and then proceed. The race directors will have final decision 0n any delays or cancellations.
