Welcome to the Family Jewels 5K!
The Family Jewels 5K is an annual trail run and walk in memory of Bothell XC runner Jaimeson Jones. It is held every year at Saint Edward State Park in Kenmore, WA, which was Jaimeson's favorite place to run.
As always, the Family Jewels 5K is a fun, family-friendly run, walk or stroll where we do some educating toward our goal of saving young men's lives and then let it loose when the start gun goes off! And, if you haven't heard, there will be PIE. Lots and lots of PIE. :) Plus more food, hot drinks, and some other fun features. Those of you who are returning from last year cannot forget the Nut Hut. JOIN US!
Here's why we do what we do.
Jaimeson Jones died on October 7, 2010 at age 20 of testicular cancer. Testicular cancer is the #1 cancer of men between 15 and 35, and it is 95% curable IF it is caught early. Because he was embarrassed about his symptoms and did not realize that they were indicative of cancer, Jaimeson did not alert his family to his pain and swelling for over a year. As a result, his cancer was diagnosed very late - at Stage IV, with a poor prognosis for recovery.
Having a child with cancer devastates a family not only emotionally but financially. In our case, Jaimeson was aware that one of the many financial impacts of his illness was that we had insufficient funds for his younger sisters to attend college. So, our generous boy bequeathed his own college savings to them. And our second mission was born.
