10 fun loving souls to help us assemble the Racer Package that will include T-shirt, water bottle, food and beverage card, to be placed into each Racer Bag. We'll meet at Norman Rudy's in the evening, probably around 7pm, to start this party.
While some of the racers have started to arrive in Squamish to pick up their racer package a crew of 10 people will begin around 5-6pm assembling the Start Chute, the course leaving the venue and ensuring that all sponsorship branding and event decorative material is in place for the race start the following morning. While assembling the event and staging areas some people may be needed to assist the registration crew if the line-ups get too long.
Friday Night is for racer package pick-up and there will be a lot of activity. We will need help guiding people where to park during a short period of time where it will be busy between the hours of 5:30pm to 7pm. Ideally we keep people out of the Fire Land and have them park responsibly along Tantalus or the designated parking areas. We'd like 1 Captain for this team to help build the plan with signage and procedures.
With the Sp'akw'us Event evolving into a 2-Day format with choices for single day options, we expect that there may be a fair number of riders showing up early to get settled in for the long weekend ahead. We will need to have all participants sign waivers, then show ID, receive instructions for the weekend events and then be handed their racer package that will include their correct chip timing number plate.
Saturday Morning is expected to be our busiest time of the entire weekend with parking guidance needed between the hours of 7am to race start at 11am. We will need help guiding people where and how to park designated parking areas. We do not want people parking along Tantalus Rd during the actual event days on Saturday and Sunday. We'd like 1 Captain for this team to help build the plan with signage and procedures.
This is expected to be a very busy morning and although we have 10 spots for volunteers here, we can recruit the Venue Hosts to assist with the waiver signing and then cuing racers into the correct lines. We will need to have all participants sign waivers, then show ID, receive instructions for the weekend events and then be handed their racer package that will include their correct chip timing number plate. Our Registration Crews have in the past, elected to stick around for the day and enjoy the party as the event unfolds, there is always something to do and always more fun to be had as we build on Squamish's of great history events.
As Venue Host, you will be a big help to all the other volunteers by knowing which direction to point questions. A cue card will be provided to help with some of these questions but really, you're here to meet new people and have a great time helping people feel welcome in your town. As Venue Host, you may get called upon to help with the Registration Crew at the busier times to deal with high traffic hours. Once the race has started, it is up to the hosts to make sure that the venue stays safe, neat and orderly. Don't be afraid to ask ANYONE for help with a task that you feel ensures these principles of safe, neat and orderly.
As a Course Marshall you will be up close to the action unfolding along the race course. There are several positions throughout the day and even some that could be handled by the same person. If you are only able to help for a short time, we can set you up somewhere very early in the race so that you can be relieved of your post. If you're in for the long haul, well then you are our HERO!
We hope to have 3 Feed Stations on Saturday and 2 Feed Stations on Sunday. These Feed Stations are the Oasis in the Desert for the racers as we try to place these Stations at the point when water and nourishment is needed most. You will be busy at times slinging water and munchies but you will be viewed as an Angel in the Forest rescuing the thirsty and hungry racers. A 4 X 4 with the ability to bring in the supplies AND pack out the supplies is really needed here.
This is a fun role role for those with first aid knowledge and like to ride a mountain bike. We will break up the course for you so that you can ride in tandem with another first aid rider as you ride the event as a relay. First team of 2 riders will ride towards their switching station that contains the next 2 riders and tagging off so that those 2 riders will continue along the course. If you encounter a rider down, 1 of the 2 first aid riders will attend to the fallen rider while the other rider continues along the course towards the next switching station. If another downed rider is encountered before the next switching station, phone ahead to the next switching station for further instructions. Once you have arrived at your switching station and tagged off to the next two first aid riders, it is up to you to either continue along the course or just head back to the event venue on trails that the event does not cover.
Sweeps can be paired up with the first aid riders to assist with course re-directions, course signage removal and when needed, help clear the course of those pesky gel wrappers.
This volunteer role is a fun one as most racers are quite happy to cross the line and YOU are one of the very first people that they see! High Fives! Heck Yeahs! You will be at ground zero for the celebration of a might goal completed! You'll help ensure that the riders now know that they can get off their bike in a slow and controlled fashion. You can also inform them where they can wash their bike, park their bike, and then get a nice cold frost beverage with a well-earned meal.
Ideally we can combine Bike Wash and Bike Valet together in one area. Currently we have 2 Hockey Groups handling most of these positions but we may still need extra people. If we are full up on these two position for both days, we can re-assign to another similarly fun-filled role.
Things can get pretty hectic by now as the racers are almost all in by now and as soon as we have the first 3 positions for a majority of the age categories, we will begin the awards. We will need help in gathering the podium placing riders as well as setting up the awards podium.
After the awards, the cheers and the beers we will tidy up the venue and securing it so that it is bear aware and ready for the whole thing to happen again the following day. It's just that simple!

This is the end! we take down the dressing of the event and we pack up to go home. Some equipment can stay the night but most will have to return to its home. You will enjoy thirst quenchers aplenty and we tackle this task and create new jokes that will only make sense to those that were there for the moment it happened. What am I talking about, well you just need to be there to understand.
