Kids helping kids who have been hurt by family violence...This holiday season, Nova Vita is pleased to announce the return of our second annual Skate 2 Heal Skate-A-Thon on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the Brant Sports Complex in Paris, ON. Our goal is to have 75 kids come out to skate for a set goal (i.e. a lap for every dollar raised), have fun, help raise money for the kids who come to Nova Vita, and gain a true sense of helping others.
Family violence hurts…We at Nova Vita, see every day how exposure to violence impacts families, and we work diligently to provide safe shelter, crisis support, individual and group counselling to everyone in our community. We see the devastating impact that violence has on children, and offer programs and services specifically for children of all ages to receive the support they need.
Last year alone we had:
- 64 mothers bring 114 kids to safety and live in our emergency shelter
- 58 children were cared for in our daycare
- 45 preschoolers were supported through S.T.E.P.
- 15 children received ongoing individual counselling
- 23 children actively participated in our after school program
- 27 children who witnessed abuse attended group programming
- 4 babies were born at Nova Vita
Putting a focus on the family, and children’s programming…Nova Vita is always in need of additional funding in order to keep our children programs available. This funding helps support our Child and Youth Worker (CYW) and our Early Childhood Educator (ECE) on staff who work closely with the children and their families via individual counselling, group counselling, supported child care and community programming.
Education and sharing is important…Nova Vita believes that a primary strategy to help reduce the risk of domestic violence is through community outreach and education. Our Skate 2 Heal Skate-A-Thon is one of the ways that we can start the dialogue about healthy relationships and family violence with the children in our community. Here is what some of last year’s skaters are saying about Skate 2 Heal and Nova Vita:
“I like helping kids & their moms feel safe & happy by raising money for Nova Vita.” Carling, Age 8
“I like to help the kids at nova vita so they can be happy!" Abbey, Age 8.5
“I like knowing that me raising money would be good for helping the kids feel more comfortable when they have to stay away from their home.” Leslie, Age 8.5
“I like knowing that money would be raised to help the kids feel better and more safer and we got to do something we love, skating!” Holden, Age 6
“It was a fun way to help other people.” Alli, Age 9
