WHEELS 2019
Benefitting The Darling Home for Kids
Since its inception in 2011, Wheels has raised over $900,000 in support of capital projects and the core programs offered at The Darling Home for Kids.
Where Your Dollars Go
Past projects have included:
- Building of a wheelchair accessible playground
- A tranquil therapeutic sculpture garden
- Clubhouse for the kids
- Renovations to a respite bedroom
- Expansion of our office space
- Purchase of a wheelchair accessible van
- Installation of a new Rhapsody bathtub and hygiene chair
Proceeds from the 2020 Wheels event will go an exciting program for the Home - a Phase 3 expansion! We want to build a bigger and better home away from home for children with complex medical needs and their families. The expansion of The Darling Home for Kids is our most exciting capital campaign to date. It will add an additional 10,000 square feet onto our 23,000 square foot Home and allow us to welcome more children into our programs and provide the best care possible.
We want to create an addition to our respite hallway with the construction of three new bedrooms and two adjoining bathrooms. In our mission to increase our capacity, we will also build the infrastructure required to support more children at the Home. Our exterior will also undergo changes. We need to increase our accessibility and ensure our outside is equipped to handle the inside – we will extend our driveway and increase our parking capacity by 50%. We will also build an extension onto our caretaker’s cottage, keeping our wheelchair van safe and accessible, while providing a safe evacuation point for our kids in the case of an emergency.

The Impact of Your Ride
The Darling Home for Kids is a place of joy, filled with the smiles and laughter of children engaging in unique and enriching experiences. Located in Milton, we are a state-of-the-art facility providing respite, hospice palliative and residential care and since opening our doors in 2004, we have provided over 300,000 hours of service to children across Ontario.
Medically fragile children receive wonderful care in a beautiful, warm and home-like environment, which provides comfort and a break to families facing the daily challenges of caring for a child with complex medical needs. Families are supported knowing that there is a continuum of care from respite through to palliation and, when needed, end of life care.
It is our fundamental philosophy that all children be loved and valued, and given the opportunity to be challenged in an environment where they can thrive.
“The support The Darling Home for Kids provides goes beyond nurses caring for special needs children. They save families”
– Erin Gibson, Piper’s Mom
Every dollar raised from Ride with Wheels directly supports our programs and services at The Darling Home for Kids, helping to ensure that our Home is here when families need us the most.
