The Comox Valley Road Runners (CVRR) are hosting a 25k Full Cumby and a 13k Half Cumby trail race! We are also pleased to introduce our newest race, the Mini Cumby. We are eager to provide opportunities for our younger runners to race. Our Mini Cumby is 5.5 km and will have age categories 1st, 2nd 3rd male and female starting at age 10 - 12 years, 13 - 16 years and 17 - 19 years old. There will be one category for racers in the Mini Cumby age 20 +. Walkers are welcome to register and join the Mini Cumby to explore the Cumberland Community Forest at a slower pace.
Why is there no age category under the age of 10 years in the Mini Cumby? The Cumby organizing committee wanted to encourage younger racers to participate in the Cumby and planned a new shorter race. We wanted to provide reasonable age categories in order that younger racers were not up against older youth. It is a challenging 5.5 km course and would not be suited to younger racers so we did not want to encourage children less than 10 years to race the course. We made this decision thoughtfully and in consultation with youth athletic coaches.
The Cumby 2019 will take place in the hills above the picturesque and historic village of Cumberland. Where once it was the largest Chinese community north of San Francisco and was supported by coal mining, in the last decade Cumberland has developed a new reputation as a mecca for mountain biking and outdoor adventure. The Cumby takes advantage of an extensive system of bike trails. The route also includes parts of the Vancouver Island Spine Trail and provides scenic vistas of Baynes Sound and Georgia Strait. While both the 13 km and the 25 km are similar to last year, we have changed the route so stay tuned for the maps available on the website.
The race starts in No. 6 Mine Heritage Park in downtown Cumberland and proceeds through the Cumberland Community Forest and adjacent working forests. The race route takes a steady climb through rich timberland and reclaimed logging areas. CVRR promises you a fast, technical race that is predominantly single track, with tough but runnable uphill climbs, stream crossings, narrow bridges and fast descents. The Half Cumby will follow the Full Cumby route to the half way point before a quick romp to the finish line.
Visit our website www.thecumby.ca for full details of the 13k and 25k events.
Why are we doing this?? The race is a fundraiser for the Cumberland Community Forest Society (CCFS). All net proceeds go to the CCFS. Check out the YouTube video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxP3t4J_7ew to see the monumental efforts of the CCFS to purchase and preserve large tracts of pristine forest on Cumberland's perimeter. We are thrilled you have chosen to support this cause.
Only 300 spots available in the 13k, 200 spots in the 25 km event and the 5.5 is capped at 100 runners. Walkers are also welcome in the 5.5 km event.
PLEASE NOTE - you must be at least 16 on race day to participate in the 25k. All Cumby particpants under 19 on race day must have parental consent, and parents/guardians must sign a waiver on race day. All 13K participants under 14 on race day must be continuously accompanied by a registered adult racer on the course. All 5.5 km participants under the age of 14 years must be continuously accompanied by a registered adult racer on the course.
Looking forward to seeing you on Race Day! Saturday May 11, 2019
