Dion Winter Goose Chase Snowshoe Race – Trail Conditions update and race day instructions- Friday January 31, 2020
Snowshoe race? Or Winter Trail Race with footwear traction devices? We still don’t know.
Please be prepared for both.
I was on the course yesterday, and I was surprised to see that there was a base of hard-packed snow on most of the trails at Shades mills Conservation Area, although some of the more well-used trails are quite bare with some icy patches. Please prepare for the possibility of a trail race with winter traction footwear (micro spikes or yak track-type devices or making your own simple and inexpensive screw shoes http://skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm )
There is still the possibility of getting more snow between now and Sunday morning. Please bring your snowshoes in case we get enough snow to hold a snowshoe race. The final call on this will be made on Sunday morning. When you pick up your race number (and awesome race swag – The Dion Goose Soup mug!) the volunteers at the registration table will let you know if you will be wearing your snowshoes or winter traction devices.
***Please do not wear your screw shoes in snowshoes. For some people this may mean bringing a separate pair of running shoes for your snowshoes ***
If you have rented snowshoes at registration, and if it is not a snowshoe race, you will be refunded your $10 on race morning at the registration table.
Sorry that I can’t make the call now, with the unpredictable weather, it’s hard to know what Sunday will be like. We will have a fun winter race no matter what, can’t wait to see you all there.
The Dion Winter Goose Chase 7k snowshoe running race winds through the trails in the beautiful Shades Mills Conservation area in Cambridge, Ontario. The Dion Winter Goose Chase Snowshoe race is the 3rd race in the Dion Ontario Snowshoe Running Series. Your race fee includes participation in the event, a registration gift, a delicious pancake breakfast, and your chance to win many fabulous draw prizes from our sponsors - including a pair of DION racing snowshoes. If you don't own snowshoes, you can rent a pair (during online registration) to race in on race day for $10. Proceeds to support the Michael Fleming Centre and Beyond 21. Come on out and chase the goose, gander and geese through the snow. Please note that this race has a maximum registration cap of 100 entrants. There will be no race day registration. As of September 17, we are out of rental snowshoes. You can still register and run, but runners who have not reserved a pair of snowshoes online, will need to arrange to borrow or bring their own snowshoes to race in.
