The Feet, Fins, & Flippers 5K is GOING VIRTUAL!
Use your FEET to help our FINNED and FLIPPERED friends - virtually!
Join runners, walkers, and animal-lovers for the virtual Feet, Fins, & Flippers 5K to raise money for the National Marine Life Center! Run, walk, roll, stroll, flip, skip, indoors or outdoors, from near and afar – your efforts will save sick and injured seals and turtles!
*** THIS IS A VIRTUAL EVENT! ***
Due to the ongoing covid pandemic, we have decided to transition the National Marine Life Center's Feet, Fins, & Flippers 5K to a virtual event. We want to make sure you, our valued supporters, stay safe and healthy by giving you the opportunity to participate remotely - in whatever way you like! Here's how it works.
Step 1: Register to run or walk in one of the categories below. You will receive an e-mailed confirmation number from our partners at Race Roster. This confirmation number will be used to upload your self-timed or app-timed race results. All participants will be entered into a drawing to win an ultimate adoption package that includes a virtual behind-the-scenes tour and the ability to name a sea turtle patient!
Step 2: If you like, encourage your family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues to support you! All fundraisers will be entered into a drawing to win an ultimate adoption package as described above. Additionally, the top fundraiser will win an ultimate adoption package. Fundraising is recommended but not required. Every dollar raised goes to help sick and injured sea turtles and seals, advance science, and teach about ocean conservation!
Step 3: From May 16 to May 31, 2020, run or walk 5K. You can do this anywhere - your neighborhood, the beach, the Canal, a local trail, your treadmill! Please participate responsibly and maintain appropriate social distancing guidelines. Please only run or walk with others in your household. And feel free to bring along your favorite non-human running partner!
Step 4: During your run or walk, if you would like to time yourself, you can do so using the ASICS Runkeeper app OR your favorite timing app. ASICS has partnered with Race Roster to easily upload times. When you are finished running, simply go to our results page (link will be e-mailed to you), enter your last name and confirmation number or log in to your Race Roster account, and input your time. You may also upload a photo from Runkeeper or your timing app that confirms your time. That's it!
Step 5: Check back on the results page to compare your times with others. Then, wait for your t-shirt to arrive in the mail!! If you like, share photos of your run on our Facebook page, @NationalMarineLifeCenter.
Please note: we kindly ask you to be patient while waiting for your t-shirt. To ensure we have enough for all participants, we are printing them after registration closes. Your registration fee includes U.S. shipping. For international shipping, please e-mail nmlc@nmlc.org. Additionally, shipping/supplier times may vary due to covid-19. If you live locally and would like to arrange a non-contact t-shirt pickup at our facility, please e-mail nmlc@nmlc.org. Pickups at our facility will also include a free NMLC Nalgene bottle.
In these challenging times, we are seeing increased impacts on stranded animals. It's harbor seal pupping season, and harbor seal moms regularly leave their young pups ashore while they go out to sea to feed. Normally, pups are fine by themselves for the few hours their moms are out fishing, but as people visit the beach they see the small seals and - sometimes with the best of intentions and other times just to get a selfie - interact with the young seal. This scares its mom away and leaves the young pup alone and vulnerable. It also causes stress which increases risk of illness. With so many people out on beaches right now, seals cannot haul out to rest or recover without being harrassed by humans. Your participation in the virtual Feet, Fins, & Flippers 5K allows the National Marine Life Center to remain open for animals in need. Thank you for your support!
