My brother, Jeff, passed away in March 2019 at the age of 27 from a rare form of cancer (Desmoplastic small round cell sarcoma). From a young age, Jeff had an affinity for the word 'Legacy.' I never really thought much of this, until his passing. To no one's surprise, Jeff left an incredible legacy in his life. He taught (and continues to teach me) that small efforts can make a big difference and that life is all about the attitude you take on each day. It's the decisions and actions we take each day that help define the legacy we leave. I'm participating in this year's Walk/Run/Wheel with Wellwood to continue Jeff's legacy and support all of the other important people in my life (and beyond) who have been affected by cancer.
Due to the impacts of COVID-19, this year's Walk/Run/Wheel fundraising event is being held virtually over the course of one week (October 18 - 24). This is very different than last year, but as the saying goes, unprecedented times call for unprecedented measures. I would argue that they also call for extraordinary actions and remarkable people - like all of you. It is in this spirit that I am asking you to help me reach an ambitious goal of collectively covering 91 km's in seven days. I picked 91 because it was the year Jeff was born. I never want to forget that this is all a part of continuing his legacy, so it feels like the right number (1,191 kms felt like a little too much)!
To put this in perspective, 91 km’s is nearly 1,000 laps of a football field. In other words, it’s way too much for me to do alone. So, I am hoping that you will be willing to help me reach this goal! Here's how it will work:
• If you would like to participate, simply fill out the survey at the following link to let me know how many kilometers you hope to walk/run/wheel between October 18 – 24th: https://forms.gle/gLGrcZs9sPwFbRgW8.
• You can cover off your commitment in one day or break it up throughout the week, whatever you prefer,
• I will keep a running tally of our collective commitments and send updates to all of you before, during and after the week,
• At the end of the week, you can let me know if you reached (or exceeded) your goal and I will send you a huge virtual high-five and massive thank you for taking part,
• Everyone who reaches their goal will have their name entered into a hat for a chance to win a super cool, secret prize. It's cool. Trust me.
• If you know someone else who would like to participate, please share this email and have them reach out!
If thirteen people committed to 1 km per day for seven days, we would reach our goal. If you are feeling ambitious and want to take on more than that, or if you have a few friends that would want to participate, we could easily crush this goal. Dare I say we could double it!?
In addition to reaching the 91 kilometres, another important aspect of this event is to raise funds for Wellwood. As you can imagine, these are very challenging times for charities, especially those servicing the immunocompromised. Given that this is Wellwood's biggest fundraising event for the year, any donation you are able to provide would go a long way towards empowering those living with cancer in our community.
Maybe you would consider passing this challenge onto others - the more participation and awareness put towards the fundraiser the better. Maybe you could make it your own personal challenge that for every 1km you do, you will donate a certain number of dollars.
Regardless of the participation number, the dollar number can make a huge difference to Wellwood. If you feel inclined to donate (big or small), I would greatly appreciate your support. Together, we can make a difference for our community.
