After retiring from a career of service at UBC, I began to find the days, week, months, and then years beginning to blur together. I recognized in myself a need to be engaged in meaningful work. Then late last summer, in the midst of the pandemic, I was given an opportunity to go to work, joining the staff of North Shore Community Resources (NSCR). Here I have met with a group of individuals who intuitively recognize as Mother Teresa did that “we all experience that in our lives – the pain of loneliness”, and who then put Mother Teresa’s advice into practice, “let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier.”
Every day the NSCR staff work to make a difference in the lives of kids & families, seniors & caregivers. They provide legal services, giving hope and protection to vulnerable people who have nowhere to turn. They advocate for affordable housing. They link volunteers with opportunities to serve. They provide information so people can navigate community services and they support young adults to plug into democratic processes. That’s a lot!
Because I believe in the work that the staff of NSCR do to make a difference in people’s lives, and in so doing contribute to building a thriving community, I’m participating in this year’s Scotiabank Charity Challenge. This takes place between June 2nd and July 5th when we race, walk, bike, dance, hike, or whatever gets you moving, and invite your donations to support and build upon what our NSCR staff do best – ensuring that those who come to us looking for help leave “better and happier”. While perhaps we alone cannot change the world, together we can “cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” Thank you for your support.
Kindly yours, larry
