We are back!!! Well…sort of…

2020 has been an exceptional year for everyone around the world. We sympathize with those who have experienced hardships and challenges in relation to this pandemic - including the loss of loved-ones. The pandemic has also had a huge impact on running events and their charities, including the Foodfare WPS Half Marathon. Our race committee is working extremely hard with the hopes to have a live event again where we can all run together in support of an amazing charity – The Canadian Cancer Society. Until then, we thought we would do something a little different for us and for you. Wouldn't it be great if we can manage to provide our dedicated participants, who return year after year, with a live event in May 2021 and you used our virtual event to train for it?

What is the Covid-19K?

Well...it started off as a joke at a committee member meeting and we just kinda ran with it. The Covid-19K is a 19 km virtual event. You may think that a 19km event is an odd distance. Well, it is!!! 2020 has been an odd year so it seems only fitting. The great thing about this event is you have complete control how, when and where you want to complete it. Perhaps you want to finish off 2020 with a goal, or perhaps you want to start 2021 with one. You can complete the distance all at once or you can do it slowly over time. The best part is participants are not limited to just running this event – you can walk, hike, bike, snow-shoe, cross country ski. You could even skate it! The options are endless and the choice is yours.

Why sign up for yet another virtual event?

We thought about this. With every running event in the world switching over to virtual, we knew we had to make ours unique and special. We believe we are going to accomplish this.

First, the name and distance of this event is unique to what is happening in the world at the moment.

Second, you will WANT this medal!!! IT IS HUGE!!! We have never done anything like it before. In fact, we don't know of anyone else who has either! The company that is making our sample medal, who makes medals for events all around the world, even said 'this medal is going to be huge!'. Once you see it, you will want it which is why we decided to show it to you now. See below for details of what we have designed and a sneak peak of the design thus far. A long standing tradition with our live event has been to provide our participants with a gift at the finish line. Therefore, along with your medal, you will also receive a surprise gift!

Third, this is our chance to come together the only way we know how. Our race has been successful because of our amazing participants and volunteers who come back year after year. We miss you all! We miss seeing familiar faces, chatting with you at kit-pick up and greeting you at the finish line. Our hope is for us all to come together with photos and comments on social media until we are able to all come together physically again. We welcome everyone into the amazing running community we are a part of, whether you have run previous events with us or this is your first one.

Last, our charity – The Canadian Cancer Society – needs you more than ever. The pandemic may eventually go away; however, cancer is still here – it has never left. It is so important that we continue to support them. It is important to continue for those who are currently fighting their battle with the disease and for those who we have unfortunately lost along the way.

Gifting a race entry

A cool option also available to you is the opportunity to register someone you know and surprise them with an entry in the form of a gift. You will see this option when you are checking out. Perhaps it could be your favorite running buddy, someone who is interested in getting more active and needs a goal, or someone who just needs to get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air after months of lock-downs and uncertainty.

How to track your run/walk using the ASICS Runkeeper™ app:
1. From your mobile device, go to your Race Roster dashboard for this event HERE
2. Click on the “Connect to my app” button, where you will be asked to confirm your name within the app (confirm your name and the event will be added to your app)
3. Revisit the Runkeeper™ app when you are ready to participate. From your start screen, click the flag symbol (bottom right) and select the race to start recording.
4. Complete your distance and save the activity. Your results will be automatically posted to the Race Roster leaderboard HERE
5. From the results page, click on your name to see your finisher summary
