Run the Missouri is back with some exciting new changes for 2021! Celebrate Missouri's Bicentennial by joining Lewis & Clark and their Corps of Discovery on a virtual journey along the Missouri River from St. Louis to Kansas City. Run the Missouri is a virtual running and walking event that follows their journey across the state of Missouri, traveling along the Missouri River from St. Louis to Kansas City. You'll virtually traverse 371 miles of the Lewis & Clark National Historic Driving Route, which runs along the north bank of the river. To commemorate your personal expedition, you'll receive your choice of a soft cotton tee or a technical singlet - and a custom medal! If you are up for an even bigger challenge, you can sign up for the Return Journey option: a 689 mile round trip from St. Louis to Kansas City along the northern route and back to St. Louis along the southern route. Those who register and complete the round trip will receive a unique addition to add to their medal commemorating the 318 additional miles back to the Arch.

Your goal is to log any miles you travel on foot and try to cover all 371 (or 689) miles before the end of the year. Every time you log a journey into the Run the Missouri online system, you will see your location along the virtual course (complete with street view images!) and your position on the mileage leaderboard. You'll even be able to search and locate any friends and family who are participating with you! Logging your miles is easy and instructions will be sent to all participants before the event starts on May 1st. Check out the FAQ section for additional details.

FAQs
When does this challenge take place?
Run the Missouri officially kicked off on May 1st and you have until December 31st to complete the 371 or 689 miles, but you can register and join anytime through July and still get your swag and take part in the challenge.
How many miles per week do I need in order to complete the challenge on time?
For those who begin the challenge on May 1st, the weekly mileage needed to complete the challenge by the end of the year is:
Run the Missouri (371 miles from STL to KC): ~ 11 miles per week
Run the Missouri & Return Journey (689 miles STL to KC to STL): ~ 20 miles per week
How does it work?
Log any miles you travel on foot (running, walking, hiking, etc) starting May 1st and try and cover 371 or 689 miles before January 1st, 2022. Every time you log a run, you'll be able to see where you would be along the virtual race course, including the ability to load the street view of your current location along the route, as well as a leaderboard so you can see your friends and rivals progress each day. All registrants will receive detailed instructions on how to log their miles and where to view the map with progress.
How do I log my miles?
This year we are using Race Roster to track your progress. Race Roster's activity logging is easy to use and tied to your registration, so no need to use multiple accounts and sites. You'll be able to see your progress on the map every time you enter an activity, and utilize a searchable leaderboard so you can track the progress of your friends and family! Instructions will be sent with details on how to enter your activities.
How and when will I receive my shirt?
Participants will choose whether to pick their shirt up from a Fleet Feet St. Louis location, or pay to have their shirt shipped directly to them. We will order/ship shirts around the 1st of each month, and you will receive an email notifying you when your shirt is available for pickup or has been shipped to you. If you do not receive a notice by the 21st of the month after you registered, please email jake@fleetfeetstlouis.com.
Is there swag/awards?
All registrants will have their choice of a soft cotton tee or a tech singlet. All finishers will receive a custom finisher's medal commemorating your accomplishment. Those who do the Return Journey as well will receive an additional medal piece to add to your first medal. During registration, you can either choose to pick your medal up at a Fleet Feet St. Louis location, or pay $4 to have it shipped to you. We will start distributing medals in late June or early July to those who finish the challenge before then, and then each week we'll contact all finishers from the prior week to coordinate their medal pickup (we will also ship medals weekly). Bragging rights and respect will go to those who finish it the fastest.

New for 2021
For those who have done a Run the Missouri event in the past, we have made some changes to the event.
Activity Logging
The biggest change for 2021 is that miles will be logged on Race Roster, rather than a third party provider. You will no longer need to have an additional log in and request to join the event after registering as you did in the past, and more importantly, you will now be able to search the leaderboard and view the progress of any friends or family, which was a highly requested feature from last year's event.. The only negative to this change is that you are no longer able to automatically sync mileage from third party tracking apps, and will manually enter your mileage throughout the event. However, we hope that logging in regularly will make the event more fun and engaging!
Shirt Distribution
In order to decrease the registration fee participants may pick their shirt up from a Fleet Feet St. Louis location, rather than automatically paying for shipping. For those who prefer to have their shirt mailed there is an option to add shipping during registration. Participants will be notified when their shirt is available for pickup or has shipped.
Round Trip Option
Rather than have two separate challenges like we did last year, participants have the option to do both the Run the Missouri and the Return Journey all in one shot. For those who want to take on the the 371 miles from St. Louis to Kansas City along the route north of the river, and then return 318 miles from Kansas City to St. Louis along the southern route, you can choose that option during registration. Those who complete the 689 mile round trip will receive an additional medal to attach to the main medal to commemorate your achievement.
