Harts of Teal

Dear Friends, 

I sincerely hope this letter finds you and your families well. 

My name is Kim Airhart. I am a recent ovarian cancer survivor, wife, and mother to five wonderful children. In February 2020 I was diagnosed with stage 3C Ovarian Cancer.  Healthy, active, and barely over 40, ovarian cancer was the last thing on my mind. Life as I knew it changed forever.  Chemotherapy, major surgery, and maintenance drugs became my new way of life…but…my story allowed me to connect with others on the same journey.  Through this experience, I started to understand the importance of early detection and community awareness.

A few facts on Ovarian Cancer:

⦁    #1 deadly cancer of the reproductive system

⦁    5th leading cause of cancer related deaths in women

⦁    ~22,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year

⦁    Five-year survival rate of 39% and 17% with detection in stage 3 and 4 respectively

⦁    15% of cases detected in stage 1

⦁    80% of cases are diagnosed in late stage 3 or stage 4

⦁    Currently there is no accurate diagnostic tool for early-stage detection.  Symptoms are vague and often brushed off as other ailments.

For all the reasons above, my family and I felt it especially important to highlight the issues of ovarian cancer in our community.  We created the "Harts of Teal" organization to elevate awareness of Ovarian Cancer through community-wide activities and fundraising.  For our first act, “Harts of Teal” will host a 5K/Family Fun Color Run.  For this event, we will be partnering with Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance, Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, a Share Hope International, a non-profit 501 (C) (3).  All donations are tax deductible with 100% of event proceeds going to early detection research and community awareness campaigns.
