Help Cara raise money

For participating in 2021 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon

My Story…

For the month of October, I will be walking every day to amount to a  virtual "Hat Trick" (a half marathon, a 10k and a 5k) during Scotiabank's Charity Challenge on behalf of Scientists in School.  I am walking for SiS  because they deliver hands-on STEM workshops to K-8 classes throughout Canada, sparking interest in the sciences and inspiring the next generation of Canada's scientists and engineers.  I also believe that a basic science education is something every person needs and doesn't always get.

As a board member I've had a lens into how the organization has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by pivoting to deliver virtual workshops paired with kits sent to schools so kids can still benefit from the hand-on nature of the SiS experience.  For the first time, virtual workshops have enabled SiS to kindle wonder and excitement in science in every province in Canada this past year.

I've also gained a perspective on the issue of equity.  Schools in higher income neighbourhoods can raise money to fund one or more SiS workshops for every classroom.  But schools in lower income neighbourhoods can afford far fewer.  Everyone should get the benefit of STEM enrichment.  SiS has been fundraising to close this gap but more needs to be done.

I've set a goal of raising $2000 - the equivalent of about 10 workshops and enough for about half the classes in a typical school.  Please help Scientists in School reach another classroom by sponsoring my walk.

Description

Scientists in School engages more youth than any Canadian science education charity, museum or science centre. Last year, we reached our 10 millionth scientist! But more work still needs to be done. Your donation will help us to subsidize our workshop costs so that they remain affordable for schools and will provide free workshops to youth in low-income communities. Donate now to help us raise the next generation of frontline health workers, researchers, technologists and scientists – just a few of the STEM workers that are essential in critical times like what we are facing today!
