Description

Kawasaki disease (KD) is the main pediatric disease responsible for coronary artery complications (aneurysms) in children under 5 years old and approximately 688 Canadian children will be affected annually (nearly 2 children per day); regrettably, understanding and expertise is limited and fragmented across the country. Proper diagnosis and treatment within a short 10-day window can dramatically reduce the chance of complications from 25-30% to less than 5%; saving over 170 children's hearts every year. When undiagnosed and untreated, this rare disease leads to lifelong heart damage that most often results in heart attacks, congestive heart failure or sudden death. Kawasaki Disease Canada is the only Canadian national charity working to improve outcomes of KD; aspiring for big impact, striving to be at the forefront of issues by: facilitating support among families affected; bridging the gap of critical awareness and preventative education which is critical to early diagnosis and subsequent treatment; and dispersed funding for specialized and essential research via Grants and Scholarships.
