2021 Book It 5K
benefiting Books from Birth and Emmanuel Center

The 11th Annual Book It 5K will be in-person and will include a 5K Run/Walk, a 1-Mile Walk and races on the track for children! We look forward to the excitement of race day festivities and seeing you all again!
To promote social distancing, the race will have a 10 minute start window. you may start your race anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 9:10 a.m. The start window is subject to change.
The 5K race will start at Church of the Holy Communion, wind through the shady course in the neighborhood, and finish up in the parking lot next to the track and field at Holy Communion.
For those who can't be there on race day, a virtual 5K option is available.
The 1-Mile participants will walk through a portion of the neighborhood before heading back to the church and finishing with a lap on the track.
Afterwards, 100 Meter and 200 Meter races on the track will start for kids ages 4-14! All 100 Meter and 200 Meter dash runners will get a finisher's ribbon.
Post race festivities will include food, music, games, balloon artist, face painting, race awards and door prizes!
Race T-Shirts: Option of long-sleeve cotton t-shirt or a short-sleeve tech shirt.
5K Race Day Awards: Overall, Master, Grandmaster, Senior Grandmaster, Stroller and Age Group Awards
Why? The best part is that the race raises funds and awareness for two local organizations that are changing children's lives for the better, Emmanuel Center, in downtown Memphis, and Books from Birth.

All proceeds go to the Emmanuel Center and Books from Birth.
Emmanuel Center, founded in 1989, is a ministry which serves the 38126 zip code, one of the most impoverished in the county, by providing after-school programs including social service programs, spiritual direction, recreation activities, mentoring and tutoring. For the 2020-2021 school year, Emmanuel Center adapted to the pandemic by offering a Virtual Learning Pod to the children and families it serves. The pod hosted fifty-five students in grades K-12. In the Learning Pod, students attend their schools virtually, receiving help with independent schoolwork and additional literacy tutoring. Emmanuel Center has been providing educational support packets, food boxes and other assistance, delivered to each family based on its needs. The center will resume its six-week literacy camp, Camp Hope, this summer. Emmanuel Center's vision is hope, education and success for all children.
Books from Birth, now a part of Porter-Leath, is affiliated with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. Its mission is to advance childhood literacy and its program reaches almost half of all children from birth to age 5 in Shelby County. It delivers one book per month to every child enrolled in the program. As the local and largest affiliate of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and in partnership with the Governor's Books from Birth Foundation, Books from Birth creates literacy connections for families. These connections inspire nurturing bonds between caregivers and children and help provide preschoolers the foundation they need for future academic success.
