Due to Covid and the restrictions that are currently in place the ability to host an outdoor remote running event such as the Klondike Ultra is not allowed.
In order to adapt, Wildland Sports Inc has created a challenge for participants that had signed up for the Klondike Ultra!
Sign up for the Covid Virtual Klondike Ultra between May 15-24th You have trained hard the past few months and even though it’s not what we all wanted it is still a way for you to test your hard earned abilities on the Klondike Ultra course and set the bar for next year!
What's included:
A very well marked course. We’ll use pin flags and signs with arrows.
Pin flags are color coded Red 50/100km, Blue 27km, and Green 10km.
A Covid Klondiker cool shirt.
Finishers medal.
Ranking-once you upload your results to raceroster.
The Details:
All Alberta Covid restrictions apply.
The race course will consist of 100km, 50km, 27km, and 10km on marked courses that are the same as The Klondike Ultra course descriptions.
When you arrive at the start/finish area you will go through a gate to enter Wierenga’s property. To the right of the gate is a large field for parking. Further down the field there will be a sign that reads start/finish. If you arrive and there are other people starting their run please remain in your vehicle till the area is clear of people and/or keep the minimum distance away. Maintain the minimum distance of 2 metres if you encounter other trail users.
There will be NO support or aid stations provided by Wildland Sports Inc. If you want to use a gpx file- Google search Klondike Ultra, race distance and scroll to the bottom to find the gpx file or when you sign up you can upload the race route. All courses run clockwise. For directions on how to get to the Start/Finish area, Klondike and Central Staging areas go to the Klondike Ultra website.
Participants can run June 11-13th 2021 and June 18-20th 2021. 6 days to complete the course distance and upload their results to raceroster with a photo (jpeg file). June 21 midnight will be the cut off to enter your time. We will be there the entire time keeping track of who is coming and going and to cheer you on!
Participants can have support at Klondike Staging Area and/or Central Staging Area. Stay within your cohort group, maintain physical distancing at all times between any support from different households. Lastly adhere to all current Covid-19 restrictions.
Remember there are animals out there: bears ( both kinds), cougars, wolves, and female grouse ( I was charged by one once) = pepper spray.
Whatever garbage you bring in please take out. I find it useful to have a spot for snacks in your pack and a separate spot for wrappers.
Outhouses are at Central and Klondike staging areas and also there are a couple on Wierenga’s property. If you need to go to the bathroom in the woods please go off the trail a distance, kick a hole in the ground, and cover up what you have expelled. I like to see toilet paper in nature, said no one ever.
Bring your own hand sanitizer.
Horseback riders like to use the trails, if you run fast up to them they may think you're going to eat them and buck their rider off. Talk lots when you approach them and smile, horse people think we are crazy, doing what we do! We will have signs at the Staging areas informing user’s of the park that they may meet runners on the trail.
Good water sources are hard to find on the course so ensure you carry an adequate amount of water. Remember to bring bug repellant.
Cell phone coverage is sporadic. If you need to place a call and it is not working keep moving till you have coverage. In the event of an emergency call 911.
Camping is permitted on Wierenga’s and can be arranged through raceroster. Remember the social distancing rules when camping.
This will be the first on site virtual for the region! In saying this, please respect all restrictions that are in place so we may continue to enjoy what we love to do!
