The George W. Orton Run Challenge consists of completing a set distance every hour, for either 3, 5 or 10 hours as a way to test both the endurance as well as discipline in those wishing to commemorate one of Canada’s greatest runners of all time as well as our nation's first Olympic Gold medal winner.
This format was inspired by a combination of modern events such as the Goggins’ Challenge and the Mile an Hour Marathon, aimed to offer something for both the hardcore competitor, the leisurely jogger, and everyone in between.
Participants are encouraged to choose a quantity of intervals that can fit their lifestyle (some of us are bored and would love to fill up a Saturday and others are trying to keep up with a jam packed schedule), and then choose a distance that you can do comfortably in a single run that takes you anywhere from 10-50 or so minutes. The idea is to push your endurance a bit, but still have enough energy to give a full effort on the last interval.
*Trying to complete a TOTAL distance of any more than about 50% further than the longest distance you’ve ever been able to run may decrease the likelihood of success and increase the risk of injury.
Due to the current pandemic, this run will be done virtually and each participant will be responsible for mapping out their own route. You can either choose to do the same route every interval, run several unique routes of the same distance or any combination thereof.
Since this is a challenge and not a race, the only person you are competing with is yourself and your will to complete the final interval. That being said, results of participants’ total distances, times and paces will be posted following the event for those that upload their GPS data to Strava and wish to see how others fared.
There will be prizes drawn from all the participants and maybe some other surprises as well.
