My Story…
This year I am running the Pittsburgh Half Marathon to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of my grandmother, Martha, who passed away last October. After caring for and ultimately losing her sister Margaret to the same disease, I can’t even begin to imagine how hard it was for her the first time she heard her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. We watched over the last 10 years as she slowly lost so much of herself to the disease- aside from large parts of her memory, she lost her beloved boat club, her garden, her hummingbirds (along with other miscellaneous wild animals that came on her porch to eat), her car, and ultimately her home- having to leave for assisted living. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure, and really not much they can do to help slow down the progression of this disease. It is absolutely heart wrenching to watch someone you love have their mind and memory stripped from them. And although it took so much from her, it didn’t take everything. She always remembered who my dad was. Even on her worst days in the nursing home, she always recognized me. She still did crossword puzzles daily, she never missed a Penguin game on TV, and I’m pretty sure she asked for a gin and tonic every single day until the day she died.
I am hopeful that with more research, there will be a cure for this disease, and every dollar gets us a little bit closer. Thank you so much- your donations are appreciated more than you know.
