CVRR is hosting its popular trail race event on Saturday May 7th. We plan to offer the full start and finish line experience, so here's to hoping the BC PHO cooperates.
THE CUMBY is celebrating its SEVENTH year as a fundraising event in support of the Cumberland Community Forest Society's efforts to purchase and preserve large tracts of pristine forest surrounding the historic town of Cumberland. Thanks to the generous support of our runners and sponsors we've so far managed to donate over $102,000 to this great cause, and the Comox Valley Road Runners (CVRR) is officially listed as one of the select few "Guardians of the Forest". We are thrilled you have chosen to support this cause.
Last year nearly one third of Cumby registrants made a donation to the Cumberland Community Forest over and above their registration fee. This incredible generosity resulted in over $5000 of on-line donations and a final donation of $15,000. We keep registration fees low relative to similar trail racing events so please consider donating to the CCFS when you register. Tax receipts will be automatically issued for all on-line donations of $20 and up.
Our Race Rules and Guidelines are very important. For everyone's health and wellbeing we require you to closely read and abide by the Race Rules and Guidelines presented on our website www.thecumby.ca. Please note this is a wilderness race and runners must be prepared to use good judgment to keep themselves safe with adequate fuel and fluids and be able to follow a marked course.
The BC PHO guidelines are critical so please follow them. We'll post COVID updates that affect the race on our website as they become available.
Our race theme this year is "Run For The Hills". As runners we celebrate the Cumberland Community Forest that we've all helped acquire and preserve.
Three great courses are being offered. Our race routes can be gnarly, rocky and include tough climbs and fast descents. The FULL Cumby covers 25 km, the HALF Cumby is 14 km and our shorter QUARTER Cumby measures 6 km. Check out our website www.thecumby.ca for more course information.
Races start and finish at the historic No. 6 Mine Park on Derwent Street immediately behind the Cumberland Recreation Center. Start times are as follows: the Full Cumby - 9 am; the Half Cumby - 10 am; the Quarter Cumby - 9:30 am. Check-in opens approximately 1 hour before the start of each event.
Detailed course maps are accessible on our website. Check them out under the tab "Choose Your Race" at: www.thecumby.ca. Prior to race day please confirm that the race route has not been altered. We will only make changes should something affect the course that's outside of our control.
We will again be awarding our custom wood cross cut medals to the top three finishers in each age and gender category.
A Note About The Quarter Cumby In 2019 we introduced our shorter event - The Mini Cumby - as an opportunity for people new to trail running and for our younger runners to experience trail running and racing in the forest, and to allow others simply to explore the Cumberland Community Forest at a slower pace. The shorter event continues to grow in popularity, and we want to continue encouraging everyone to learn about trail racing in our gnarly Cumberland Hills.
Children and youth Youth must be 16 and older on race day to register for the Full Cumby. We anticipate that parents and guardians will know their child's capacity. All Cumby participants under 19 must have parental consent, and parents/guardians must review the special on-line waiver relating to minors, and by completion of on-line registration are considered to have accepted all the terms and conditions of the waiver. We always recommend that children and youth be accompanied by an adult. This is an important race safety issue.
We have special rates for the young ones in the Quarter Cumby! We really want to encourage young runners to participate in trail running, so we have special rates in the Quarter Cumby for the under 19 registrants. Runners aged 14 to 18 on race day will receive a $10 discount off regular adult rates ($5 discount off early bird rates). Runners under the age of 14 on race day will receive a $20 discount off regular adult rates ($15 discount off early bird rates). Discount is applied at checkout.
This year we're also offering a special Virtual Event. Last year a number of runners appreciated the ability to run a set course on their own schedule, and in some cases were super happy to avoid the busy start and finish line. But for everyone it was important to partake in a forest run in support of the Cumberland Community Forest Society. So ..... we've recreated the virtual run using the popular 7.5 km course that starts and finishes at the information kiosk just inside the yellow main entrance gate to the forest and winds almost entirely through lands purchased by the CCFS. On route you'll see Coal Creek Historic Park and Japanese Town and the newest Perseverence Creek acquisitions of the CCFS and then wind back into some of the older sections of the Cumberland Community Forest. The course will be well marked and intended for use anytime Friday May 6th or Sunday May 8th. And May 8th is Mothers Day - why not make it a special day for a special person. The Virtual has no awards, no bibs, no timing, no support - just an opportunity to enjoy and support the forest. You're on your own with this event but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Full details and course map are included on our website www.thecumby.ca.
Visit our website www.thecumby.ca for more detail on this year's great event.
The Cumberland hills are truly a special place. Thank you for registering for our event and be sure to 'Run For The Hills'.
