My Story…

Two years ago I had an ischemic right cerebral stroke. Through my journey I have learned a lot about myself.

“The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know.” - Albert Einstein

I was recently asked “what was the most surprising thing you’ve learned since your stroke?” For me, that is a very loaded question. My simple answer was all the misconceptions around stroke. Strokes don’t discriminate, it can happen to anyone. The hard truth: if you have a brain, you could have a stroke.

“Every brain is different. Every person is different. Every injury is different. Every outcome is unique. You are not alone.”

“The problem is we remember who we were before the injury…and we strive to be that person over and over again even though we never will be.”

“Never get a chronic illness. It’s really inconvenient for people.”

“Just because I could yesterday, doesn’t mean I can today. But just because I can’t today doesn’t mean I won’t be able to tomorrow.”

“Don’t judge a disability by its visibility.”

“Do not judge my story by the chapter you walked in on.”

“I’m too functional to be disabled and too disabled to be functional.”

“There is no handbook that comes with losing your health and I’m just winging it.”

“What doesn’t kill you gives you a lot of unhealthy coping mechanisms and a really dark sense of humor."
