THE CUMBY Is About Supporting The Cumberland Community Forest
THE CUMBY is a fundraising event in support of the Cumberland Community Forest Society's efforts to purchase and preserve large tracts of pristine forest surrounding the historic town of Cumberland. To date The Cumby has raised $134,000 for this great cause, and the Comox Valley Road Runners (CVRR) is officially listed as one of the select few "Guardians of the Forest". We are pleased that the running community continues to generously support this cause.
We keep registration fees low relative to similar trail racing events so please consider donating to the CCFS when you register. Tax receipts will be automatically issued for all on-line donations of $20 and up.
Our race theme has expanded - "Run For The Hills ....... Just For The Hack Of It". Large tracts of forest in our area are being cleared, so as runners we need to support and celebrate the great work of the Cumberland Community Forest in acquiring and preserving the forest surrounding Cumberland. And this year we also show our appreciation and financial support of The United Riders of Cumberland who provide a vital link between the forestry companies and all of the recreational users on their land. UROC puts huge effort into ensuring a network of paths is controlled, kept clear of hazardous matter and accessible to all.
Our Race Rules and Guidelines Are Very Important
For everyone's health and wellbeing we require you to closely read and abide by the Race Rules and Guidelines presented on our website www.thecumby.ca. Please note this is a wilderness race and runners must be prepared to use good judgment to keep themselves safe with adequate fuel and fluids and be able to follow a marked course.
No pressure, but ...............
Registration numbers are limited and we always seem to sell out quickly. This year is capped at 700 participants (later increased to 770) so avoid disappointment and register early. If you register for one race and later change your mind or feel you can't do the distance, simply transfer to a different event up to 2 weeks before race day. A nominal transfer fee will apply and you will need to pay the difference if the new event fee is more than your original registration fee. Sorry but we won't be allowing transfers between 2 people and we can't facilitate individual transfers to a sold out event.
Three Great New Courses
Our race routes can be gnarly, rocky and include tough climbs and fast descents. To make sure you never get bored at The Cumby we have 3 completely new courses for you to experience. The FULL Cumby still covers 25 km, the HALF Cumby is 14 km and our shorter QUARTER Cumby measures 7 km. Check out our website www.thecumby.ca for more detailed course information. You can find maps under the "Choose Your Race" tab. And when you're on our website or FaceBook site check out details of the April 1st and April 22nd familiarization runs.
Start and Finish At Our New Location
You can find our NEW location at Cumberland Village Park, east end of Dunsmuir Avenue beside Coal Hills BMX Park. Start times are as follows: the Full Cumby - 9 am; the Half Cumby - 10 am; the Quarter Cumby - 9:20 am. Check-in opens approximately 1 hour before the start of each event.
Our Custom Wood Medals Making A Repeat Performance
We will be awarding our custom wood cross cut medals to the top 3 finishers in each age and gender category.
A Bit About The Quarter Cumby
In 2019 we introduced our shorter event as an opportunity for people new to trail running and for our younger runners to experience trail running and racing in the forest, and to allow others simply to explore the Cumberland Community Forest at a slower pace. The shorter event continues to grow in popularity, and we want to encourage everyone to learn about trail racing in our gnarly Cumberland Hills.
We have special rates for the under 19 year olds in the Quarter Cumby! We really want to encourage young runners to participate in trail running. During the early bird registration period all registrants under 19 as of race day will receive a $15 discount, increasing to a $20 discount after the early bird period. This reduces the Quarter Cumber entry fee for U19 runners to $15 during the early bird period, and $20 thereafter. Discounts are applied at checkout.
Children and Youth Running The Cumby
Registrants must be 16 and older on race day to register for the Full Cumby. We anticipate that parents and guardians will know their child's capacity. All Cumby participants under 19 must have parental consent, and parents/guardians must review the special on-line waiver relating to minors, and by completion of on-line registration are considered to have accepted all the terms and conditions of the waiver. We always recommend that children and youth be accompanied by an adult. This is an important race safety issue.
Give A Gift Of A Cumby Entry
For a limited time only - February 9th til February 14th - why not give a special person or friend a prepaid entry to any of the 3 events. Just click on the GIFT tab on the registration page and purchase the registration. You'll receive a voucher code good for a registration any time until our registration closes.
Our Volunteers
Conducting 3 simultaneous races involving over 500 runners who traipse across a large swath of mountain is no simple task. 100 volunteers will hopefully make this a memorable running experience for you. Be sure to show your appreciation.
Visit our website www.thecumby.ca for more detail on this year's great event.
The Cumberland hills are truly a special place. Thank you for registering and be sure to 'Run For The Hills'.

However in the unlikely event that Cumby 2023 needs to be cancelled by forces outside our control, such as natural disaster or Public Health Order restrictions, there will be no refunds for this race. The Cumby is entirely a fund raising event and as always all net proceeds from our event go directly to the Cumberland Community Forest Society. So please treat your registration fee as support of this great organization. In the event of cancellation race organizers will use best efforts to host a virtual race weekend similar to the successful event held in 2021.
