My Story
I am running the Sporting Life 10k in support of Campfire Circle, a camp that helps kids with cancer and other serious illnesses experience the joy of summer camp. In August of 2019, my son Joel, was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-ALL) at the age of 4. Joel first attended Campfire Circle in 2021, and has attended numerous times since then, both for patients-only sleepaway Week At Camp, as well as for Family Weekends at Camp. I signed up for the Sporting Life 10K race not just as a personal challenge, but as a way to make a real difference in the lives of children facing serious health challenges. By raising money for Campfire Circle, I hope to give them something that many of us take for granted—memories of laughter, friendship, and belonging. These kids are warriors who face unimaginable struggles every day, and I want to do whatever I can to help them feel like kids again. Every donation, no matter how small, will directly support Campfire Circle’s programs, helping to provide these incredible kids with a safe space where they can heal, grow, and just be themselves.
Campfire Circle is so unique, in that it has doctors and nurses on-site who can administer life-saving chemotherapy and blood transfusions, allowing even kids who are currently receiving treatment to attend camp and enjoy the fun! Joel’s favorite things to do at camp are archery, singing camp songs around the campfire in the evenings, cabin time with his friends, and the high ropes course. Joel has made several lasting friendships at camp with other kids who can relate to what he’s gone through. Please consider donating—your generosity will not only keep this special place alive, but will bring joy and hope to children who truly need it. Thank you for helping me make a difference.
