My Story…

Twenty five years ago I began my career in public safety starting in the first Sheriff’s academy weeks after 9/11.

The effects of this event have rippled across so many lives over the entire world.

This year I would like to help refocus our thoughts to the mental health of our first responders and those that may be still carrying some of the load from this event, even today. Additionally, we need to recognize the effects of the cumulative trauma from numerous calls over our careers.

Our mental health support has grown over the years to better assist our first responders. Therapeutic processes and treatments such as Brainspotting (which was effective for me) have helped me and so many others process some of the things we see in our jobs.

Finally, as we honor those that have fallen, and enter Suicide Awareness Month I am reminded of a program I saw at an NHL game called Shoulder Check. This program encouraged everyone to  REACH OUT. CHECK IN. MAKE CONTACT. The goal is self explanatory and more vital in our first responder family to watch out and check in on each other.

Again, as we look back and honor our heroes, I hope we can be reminded to also look forward and out for each other.
