Tony's Run was born March 1992, one month after the fatal shooting of Dillingham Police Department (DPD) Officer Anthony Jones. Officer Jones was dedicated to teens in need of positive role models, and was killed on-duty in downtown Dillingham by a troubled youth. To honor Officer Jones' commitment to non-violence, DPD Chief of Police Ralph Taylor and others planned the first Run. They consulted with Executive Director Ginger Baim of Safe and Fear-Free Environment (SAFE, the local victim advocacy agency) and envisioned an event that not only increased public awareness of the devastating effects of violence, but also continued Officer Jones' efforts to end violence. The First Annual Tony's Run consisted of a relay run from the Fire Hall in downtown Dillingham to Kanakanak Hospital, then to Lake Aleknagik and to the Fire Hall. DPD employees ran approximately four miles each to honor their fellow Officer and promote non-violence. Over the years, the Run has expanded to include Alaskan community participants from Dillingham, surrounding villages, Anchorage, and Fairbanks, and visitors from Wisconsin, Texas, and England. Walkers and rollers now join runners in their choice of four courses. In keeping with local tradition, potlucks were held after the Runs. The post-run dinner provides scrumptious food for participants, volunteers, and their supporters. Join us in promoting non-violence and sign up or volunter for Tony's Run!

Post Event News
Thank you all for participating, volunteering, sponsoring, pledging, and donating! We covered our expenses and earned about $1000. There are shirts left for sale for $15--3 large, 8 xl, and 5 xxl. Come to SAFE to purchase them and take them home.
There were 47 total participants. Because participation has steadily declined on the half-marathon and marathon courses, resulting in more volunteers for those courses than participants, the courses will be retired. Obtaining volunteers gets more difficult every year, so eliminating numbers of volunteers needed is necessary in order to sustain the event as a whole. Starting in 2015, the courses will be 5k and 10k, and a possible 20k (the 10k course twice). The finish line will also be the starting line, and the courses will be out and back types, on Kanakanak Road and it's path. This allows people to park where they start/finish in town, eliminates the needs for flaggers, reduces aid stations from 8 to 2, and both courses can start at the same time. The courses won't be certified with USAT&F, but their distances will be pretty darn accurate. There will still be a potluck and shirts.
Tony's Run has morphed since it started in 1992 in response to changes in participation. The last ten years have been a herculean effort, and it's time to morph again. The 24th Annual Tony's Run page will go live for registration 01/01/15, with similar pricing levels (it's cheaper the earlier you sign up). And, if you have photos, we'd love to put them on SAFE's Tony's Run page (www.safebristolbay.org). The radio ad song will also be the same next year--
"I would walk five hundred miles, and I would walk five hundred more, ..... dadadatda, dadadatda, ......)
Road Construction/Traffic Update
There are rough stretches of Multi-Use Path (MUP) along Kanakanak Road between Aleknagik Lake Road and the Finish Line, where dirt/gravel replaced pavement after culvert replacement. Squaw Creek and Scandinavian Creek crossings have temporary non-motorized traffic gravel paths, separated from the motorized vehicle lane by temporary controls (like tubular devices). If you are riding a bicycle, make sure your tires can withstand rocks, and consider bringing tools to fix/change a flat tire. You can also shoulder your bicycle over the rough stretches.
Start Times, Locations, Courses
5k (3 miles) starts at 4:00 pm at DOT Mile 3.2 Kanakanak Road (check-in starts at 3:15 pm), Robert Clark garage private driveway. Park along Kanakanak Road as far to right as possible. Do not stand in motorized vehicle lanes. Course is inbound (towards town) on road shoulder, then merges onto Kanakanak Road Multi-Use Path (MUP) to finish line (Peter Pan driveway). Motorized vehicle lanes are off-limits and crossing center line between them is grounds for disqualification.
10k (6 miles) starts at 3:00 pm at DOT Mile 3.6 Kanakanak Road (check-in starts at 2:15 pm). Park as for 5k. Do not stand in motorized vehicle lanes. Course is outbound (towards hospital) on road shoulder. Past Tony's Run Mile 21 is the turnaround, where flaggers stop traffic for participants to cross the road. A course monitor at turnaround directs you around cone, and another course monitor insures you return to road shoulder on other side. Continue inbound (towards town) on road shoulder, then as for 5k.
Half-marathon (13.1 miles) starts at 2:00 p.m at DOT Mile 5.9 Aleknagik Lake Road (check-in starts at 1:15 pm). Park along Aleknagik Lake Road northbound lane as far to right as possible, at pull-out north of Dillingham city limit sign (where check-in table is). Do not stand in motorized vehicle lanes. At 1:55 pm, start line volunteer walks you across road and north (facing traffic) to start line (500 feet north of check-in table). Stay on road shoulder. Do not obstruct southbound lane before starting. Course is southbound (towards Dillingham) on road shoulder. Merge onto MUP past Tony's Run mile 17.15 (DOT Mile 1.8 Aleknagik Lake Road). Move back to road shoulder at intersection with Kanakanak Road and turn right at stop sign (do not cut through quonset hut parking lot). Continue outbound on Kanakanak Road (towards hospital) as for 10k.
Marathon (26.2 miles) starts at 1:00 pm at DOT Mile 19 Aleknagik Lake Road, at Foxville Road intersection (check-in starts at 12:15 pm). Park along Foxville Road as far to right as possible. Do not stand in motorized vehicle lanes. Course is southbound (towards Dillingham) on road shoulder. Flaggers stop motorized vehicle traffic at Silver Salmon and Pfeiffer Creeks for participants. Continue as for Half-marathon.

Rough sections of road may exist on Kanakanak Road. Rollers may experience inner tube damage, so consider bringing replacement tubes, tire levers, and air pumps or cartridges for changes if necessay.
