My Story…
My name is Alicia McGill and I was diagnosed with Functional Dystonia in November, 2015.
In 2010, I had my first collapse on my 27th birthday. My body was moving uncontrollably which looked a lot like someone having a seizure except my body couldn't stop. I was hospitalized for nearly a week. The neurologist at the hospital told me I had an episode of Dystonia and that it would never return.
Since that time I have learned that indeed it is not gone. I have what is referred to as "episodes" of Dystonia which typically last 6 months every year. During an episode I am unable to walk properly, have severe neck twitching, have difficulty speaking due to a persistent stutter, it takes longer to process thought, and am exhausted. I have been turned down for medical help from 3 doctors and others have a 2 year waiting list.
It is my hope that spreading awareness will help people like me get the help they need.
