My Story…
I will be running for Team Blue HELP in honor of my Dad, Captain Michael Mellen, who died by suicide on August 25th, 2011 after 22 years of service in Corrections. Even before my Dad retired, he was struggling with PTSD and depression, which got even worse post retirement. Eighteen months after retirement, at age 46 he lost his personal battle to suicide. He left behind my brother (at the time 17 yrs old) and I (19 years old), his Wife, Sister, Parents, many Nieces, Nephews, In-Laws, Cousins, and Friends. It was a devastating loss not only for our family, but for the community. He was notoriously sarcastic and a jokester, he loved his family with everything he had and would drop anything to help people, he always made sure we had a comfortable life and I will forever be grateful for that. He is missed every day, and I want to make sure no other family has to endure what we have all endured. You are NOT alone, please always remember that.
