Dyslexia Canada

Dyslexia Canada is a national charity committed to ensuring that every child in Canada, including those with dyslexia, has access to effective, evidence-based reading instruction. 

We work with parents, educators, and policymakers to shift classroom instruction, assessment and intervention to align with current scientific evidence and help every child learn how to read.

Current statistics estimate that somewhere between 10-20% of the population has dyslexia. This amounts to 750,000+ students in Canadian public schools.

A central focus of our work is advancing universal early reading screening. Screening is a quick, valid and reliable way for educators to identify students at risk for reading difficulties so that support can begin before they fall years behind. When implemented effectively, screening data also helps to strengthen core instruction for all students and supports continuous system improvement. For these reasons, three Canadian Human Rights Commissions have identified universal early reading screening as a necessary practice to improve literacy outcomes. Dyslexia Canada is working to turn these recommendations into robust screening policies in all provinces and territories, and to support their implementation so that these policies lead to meaningful changes in classroom practices.
