My Story…

I'm walking 5km in the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon as part of my healing journey to raise money for a cause dear to my heart, Theatre Passe Muraille!

You may think, "Only 5km?" Yep, 5km is a lot for me these days. Last October, I had a fall that led to a broken shoulder, broken glasses, whiplash, five stitches, and concussion. Part of my rehab has been to do light cardio every day, and it's taken me a long time and a lot of hard work to be able to do 5km. Last winter, I could barely cross the street before the light changed!

Left image: a dead-eyed woman with bandage on her forehead and left arm in a sling. Right image: the same woman, fit and flexing. Text: how it started/how it's goingI've long been an advocate for accessibility, but this is my first time really understanding the lived experience of disability. It's been a lot to adjust to.

And that brings me back to Theatre Passe Muraille. I've been a volunteer and audience member at TPM since I moved to Toronto in 1995. And one of the things I love about TPM is the commitment to access and inclusion. At TPM, accessibility is not a feature of the work—it is the foundation of it.

Not just in making spaces and performances accessible, but by providing a platform for theatre creators with disabilities to tell their stories. As someone newly experiencing disability, the importance of this mission has really been driven home this past year. Getting back to the theatre—in a way accessible to me—has been a huge part of my concussion recovery.

Your donation directly supports access measures such as ASL-interpreted performances, audio-described shows, captioning, and transportation support for audience members with accessibility needs—each one a bridge between the work and the people it is meant to reach.

Please join me in supporting Theatre Passe Muraille to continue to make great theatre for all!

Description

Theatre Passe Muraille loves getting outside of our building and into the streets, making our theatre accessible to all. We're excited to bring an inclusive team to the 5km event, encouraging the communities we embrace to walk and wheel along with us. People with disabilities joining our 5km team may qualify for registration fee support. Whether you're going 5km or the full 42, every participant who chooses TPM as their charity will receive two free tickets to any show that's part of our 2026-27 season!
