Why I'm walking for social justice
Hi everyone. I'm excited to be running the 5K in the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon again this year, for the second time. I'm raising funds for the Social Justice Network (SJN) programs at Islington United Church, as part of their Walk the Walk campaign.
Through funds raised from this campaign, this volunteer network provides vital support through community support programs, such as our Giving Garden which provides produce year-round for those experiencing food insecurity through the Mabelle Food Bank. I'm also really proud of IUC's refugee support program, which has sponsored several individuals and families arriving and settling in Canada, and other important initiatives like the English conversation program and Out of the Cold.
I co-chair our Affirm Committee at Islington, dedicated to expanding inclusion and welcome in the church for 2SLBGTQ+ folks, their families and allies. Last year, we collaborated with other Affirming churches in Etobicoke to present the inaugural West End Affirm film series from March to May. This year we are planning to host a gathering of Affirming churches from Southern Ontario the weekend following the run in October.
All of this work is able to operate because of funds raised through this annual Walk the Walk campaign. I encourage and ask you to give generously as you're able, and truly appreciate your support of our work.
