I’m Stepping it Up for Science because…

Dear friends,

I'm doing the 5K walk again this year for Scientists in School, a great organization that's providing hands-on STEM enrichment workshops for elementary school children right across Canada. I've been on the Board for 8 years, and 3 years as Chair. I've seen it pivot from just on-site workshops to a mix of on-site and on-line workshops that has enabled it to reach from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland, into the Far North and into rural communities. Children need early exposure to STEM that excites them and motivates them to learn more. Whether or not they pursue careers in STEM, this motivation contributes to building an informed citizenry so necessary for Canada's future.

Description

Donate, and help meStep it Up for Science!

I’m taking part in the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon and helping Scientists in School raise $25,000 for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) enrichment workshops across Canada.

Your donation will help make sure every child in Canada -- especially those in lower-income, rural, and remote communities -- has access to hands-on STEM workshops. Workshops that give them the opportunity to BE a scientist in school today, and BECOME the researchers, engineers and technologists we need for tomorrow.

What can your donation do for young scientists?

  • Make sure every child gets to participate in hands-on scientific exploration by purchasing materials, such as sterilized owl pellets, magnifiers, pipettes, seeds, and copper tape
  • Provide consistent, high-quality experiences through extensive presenter training and mentorship and regular quality assurance visits
  • Ensure children everywhere in Canada have access to hands-on STEM learning by providing free workshps to schools and community groups in under-served areas
  • Meet the changing needs of children and educators through the development of new, curriculum-aligned workshop topics
