My Story…
My name is Marjorie Chan. I am a theatre artist and the Artistic Director of Theatre Passe Muraille. TPM as we like to call, is a theatre company with a 56 year history of putting daring Canadian works onstage. It was founded in 1968 at a rebellious college, so the idea of challenging the status quo has always been in our DNA. It is even in our name - Theatre Passe Muraille or Theatre Beyond Walls.
I feel so lucky to work at a place where I try to live our values everyday through the work we do. One of our major pillars is accessibility because we believe in everyone's right to have equal access to theatre whether as an artist or audience member. That could take many forms, such as ASL interpretation or programming Deaf artists, or even captioning for a play. For us, making sure theatre is accessible is a critical part in ensuring that our work stays relevant. We're taking this walk in order to support our initiatives and affirm our commitment to making theatre for everyone.
I became Artistic Director in 2019. In March 2020 the pandemic took over the world. In late October 2020, I had a stroke. I survived (obviously!). But I was not unchanged. There are parts of my body that do not work the same anymore. My brain is not the same. But luckily I was young enough that my body and brain continues to try and work things out, and find different pathways or detours to things that I could do before. At one point in my life, I could run a 5K. When I first had the stroke, I held that as a metric for myself - to one day run 5K again. Alas, that was 6 years ago, and is not in my current capacity. I am going to walk it though, along with my 2 year old morkie (Yorkie/Maltese) who gets me outside and brings joy to my day. I hope you can support this journey with a donation towards Theatre Passe Muraille.
Description
Theatre Passe Muraille loves getting outside of our building and into the streets, making our theatre accessible to all. We're excited to bring an inclusive team to the 5km event, encouraging the communities we embrace to walk and wheel along with us. People with disabilities joining our 5km team may qualify for registration fee support. Whether you're going 5km or the full 42, every participant who chooses TPM as their charity will receive two free tickets to any show that's part of our 2026-27 season!
