I’m Stepping it Up for Science because…

Dear friends - and friends of Scientists in School,

I’m proud to be participating in the 5K Waterfront Charity Walk again this month for Scientists in School. Over my 36-year tenure, I’ve seen firsthand the impact for children when they participate in investigative, fun Scientists in School workshops during their elementary school years. They shift from “I can’t do science” to “science is for me!”

There are two recent-year’s achievements I’m particularly proud of from so many our team has achieved. The first is pivoting from one workshop model (onsite) to a mix of on-site and on-line workshops (with student materials bags pre-shipped). The second is building relationships coast-to-coast-to-coast benefiting from now having two workshop models.

We’ve grown from serving 55 school boards pre-pandemic, to serving 178 last year across every province and territory. That’s nearly half of Canada’s school boards.

What means a lot is that 49% of total workshops benefitted youth in classrooms serving low-income communities. 18% benefitted schools in rural and small population centres.

We continue to strive to grow back to our 700,000 young scientists reach, over the decade pre-pandemic. We are now at around 315,000 annually, representing a milestone from the pandemic setback to 150,000. Good things take time! And they take staff and presenter team resources, where we currently have constraints.

Thank you for considering donating to help Scientists in School make sure every child in Canada can have access to our programs. Your donation will contribute to building a citizenry of critical thinkers, and a skilled workforce, each paramount for today’s youth, and Canada’s future.

Description

Donate, and help me Step it Up for Science!

I’m taking part in the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon and helping Scientists in School raise $25,000 for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) enrichment workshops across Canada.

Your donation will help make sure every child in Canada -- especially those in lower-income, rural, and remote communities -- has access to hands-on STEM workshops. Workshops that give them the opportunity to BE a scientist in school today, and BECOME the researchers, engineers and technologists we need for tomorrow.

What can your donation do for young scientists?

  • Make sure every child gets to participate in hands-on scientific exploration by purchasing materials, such as sterilized owl pellets, magnifiers, pipettes, seeds, and copper tape
  • Provide consistent, high-quality experiences through extensive presenter training and mentorship and regular quality assurance visits
  • Ensure children everywhere in Canada have access to hands-on STEM learning by providing free workshps to schools and community groups in under-served areas
  • Meet the changing needs of children and educators through the development of new, curriculum-aligned workshop topics
