Our story…

Welcome to our page!

Eren and I are doing this run for my grandparents, who have both suffered from Alzheimers and Dementia. In support of my father, we want to raise money to support research, help inform people about prevention and early detection, and fund resources for families who have a loved one impacted.

My grandparents immigrated from Portugal in the 1960s. They were both from Biscoitos, on the island of Terceira. My grandfather worked hard his entire life. When he first arrived in Canada, he worked in the mines, painted planes, and was part of the construction of the Gardiner Expressway. He took on labour intensive jobs to support his family of four, as well as his in-laws, who lived with them in Mississauga, Ontario. Upon retirement, he experienced ongoing health issues related to his heart for the last two decades of his life. In 2016, he was diagnosed with Dementia and, within a month of his diagnosis, he passed away. My grandfather was a true character, with the most infectious laugh, our greatest encourager, and the hardest working man I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

My grandmother worked at Ryerson University in the cafeteria. While my dad attended the school, he received plenty of special treatment, including extra food and the opportunity to see his mom between classes. Going to her house as a child was always memorable, filled with traditional Portuguese dishes, family gatherings, and great conversation. My grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's two years ago and, unfortunately, has continued to slip away from us. On her good days, she tells us old stories, mostly in Portuguese, so when she and my dad start laughing, I am always waiting for the translation so I can be in on the joke. I cherish these moments because they remind me that, despite this disease, pieces of the grandmother I have always known are still there.

Alzheimers and Dementia affects not only those diagnosed, but also the families and loved ones who walk alongside them through the journey. Supporting Alzheimer Society Toronto helps fund critical research aimed at improving treatment, prevention, and ultimately finding a cure. It also provides essential programs, education, and support services for individuals living with Dementia and the families who care for them. Every donation helps bring hope to those affected and ensures that no family has to face this disease alone.
