Christopher Rice – C7 ASIA B incomplete tetraplegia (original diagnosis)

Hi, my name is Christopher Rice and I am a 21-year-old university student. Before my injury, I was attending St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick. I was studying criminology as a bachelors degree; my goal was to become a police officer and specialize in investigations.

I had my injury in the summer of 2012. I was swimming in my backyard and slipped on a pool toy, sending me headfirst into the bottom of the pool. After almost drowning, I was sent to Southlake hospital and then Sunnybrook hospital where they diagnosed me with C7 ASIA B incomplete tetraplegia. After losing nearly 40 pounds of muscle over a very short amount of time, I have regained most function in my arms and have noticed function returning in my legs and core.

Since leaving rehab, I have begun to continue my studies with distance-learning. My plan is to finish my bachelors degree and then go on to law school. Life has definitely thrown me a curveball, but that doesn’t mean I won’t hit it out of the park!
