“Treatment for cancer in adolescents and young adults (AYA; 15-29 years of age) poses significant challenges. For example, when AYA cancer patients are treated in adult hospitals they do much worse than AYA cancer patients treated in paediatric facilities even though they follow the exact same treatment protocol. Additionally, treatment of AYA patients with cancer is further complicated by their unique social, emotional, sexual and biological concerns.
To address some of these concerns we aim to establish an annual charity duathlon event. The event will be used to raise the profile of the importance of physical activity in the promotion of health and improvement of outcomes for the AYA patients with cancer. Additionally, funds accumulated through fundraising and sponsorship from this event will go towards annual scholarships for graduates students in Atlantic Canada researching AYA cancer therapy. Our passion, combined with community support can have a major impact on the outcomes of these patients. Not just that, but we are excited to have another fun multisport event to all be a part of!”
