Jon Thurston – T10 Asia A Complete (original diagnosis)

Hi my name is Jon Thurston; I am 31 years old. In August of 2008, I suffered a spinal cord injury in a work accident when a windstorm caused a building I was constructing to collapse. As I ran out of the building, a beam landed on my back, pinning me to the ground. I was diagnosed with a T10 Complete ASIA A spinal cord injury (paraplegic). I was always an active person, enjoyed sports and outdoors, so after my injury, I pursued therapy to try and recover whatever I could. I continued in therapy close to home while searching for therapy specifically for spinal cord injuries. In March of 2009, I visited a centre in California called Project Walk, which specialized in an exercise-based spinal cord injury recovery program. I have seen impressive gains including increased function and strength of my core, hips and a small connection to my legs. I have also been able to walk with leg braces progressing from starting in parallel bars to currently using crutches. It has been amazing to find Walk It Off Spinal Cord Recovery Centre and be able to continue an exercise based recovery program for people with spinal cord injuries here in Ontario!
