My Story…
I am participating in the 2017 Sporting Life 10k #SL10K to send kids with and affected by cancer to Camp Oochigeas (Ooch). To reach my fundraising goal, I need your help!
This will be my fourth year participating in this run. Our team is named Mighty Mateja after the strength of my friend's little girl. Mateja was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma at 5 months old She had a large tumour on her adrenal glands, cancer in her bones and bone marrow. She spent 5 months on the 8th floor of Sick Kids with her parents, Ivana and Tommy. She received numerous blood transfusions, pokes, scans and tests. She endured complications where her little body would swell up as the tumour enclosed and pressed on her vessels. She was unable to eat and received liquid nutrition via a port. The volunteers from both Sick Kids and Camp Ooch would visit her room daily to put a smile on her face as well as her mothers. I am happy to report that today, Mateja is a healthy five-year old! She is in her fourth year of being cancer free.
Camp Ooch is privately funded and staffed entirely by volunteers and is completely FREE to children that are suffering from cancer. They provide numerous programs at Sick Kids that Mateja gets to enjoy every time she has a visit at the Cancer Clinic. Their camps are located in Muskoka where kids just get to be kids. It is where a child gets to forget about their illness and just enjoy their life by having fun!
Cancer changes a child's life, but so does Camp.
