My Story…
Growing up I was my older sister’s shadow. We spent hours side by side playing house. In 2004 my sister was rushed to the emergency room because she had a seizure. I cried uncontrollably while my parents consoled me and told me that everything was going to be okay. After 4 weeks the doctors sat us down and said she was ready to go home. They said we had to understand that she would always have seizures and that although her long-term memory was in tact she lost her ability to develop short-term memories. My family’s strength to support and advocate for my sister and epilepsy awareness is impenetrable. I am proud to say that my sister is able to retain some short-term memories. My sister always says sorry that this happened and I tell her that this must have been the plan all along. I tell her that I will continue to be her shadow and protect her. That we are just playing a lifelong game of house. And I tell my parents that they were right all along. Everything is going to be okay.
