On Sunday, June 23rd 2019, I am participating in Wheels benefitting The Darling Home for Kids because I want to make a difference in my community. Every dollar I raise through my participation in this event will directly support The Darling Home for Kids.

The Darling Home for Kids is a place of joy, filled with the smiles and laughter of children engaging in unique and enriching experiences. Located in Milton, it is a state of the art facility providing respite, palliative and residential care for children who are medically complex, many of whom depend on technology for daily living. Since opening the doors to families in 2004, The Darling Home for Kids has provided over 500,000 hours of service.

As Ontario’s first paediatric hospice and respite centre, The Darling Home for Kids was built on 77 acres of woodlands to provide essential care to families facing the daily challenges of caring for a child with complex medical needs. Requiring care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the parents of these special children need support. Currently, The Darling Home for Kids is one of only three homes in Ontario providing highly specialized paediatric hospice and respite services, and the only home to also offer long term residential care. This means the organization is truly one-of-a-kind, and in very high demand with more than 16,000 Ontario children requiring this level of care.

Please help me reach my fundraising goal - click on (https://raceroster.com/events/2019/19007/2019-wheels-ride-for-the-darling-home-for-kids/search-pledgees); to make a donation today.

Thank you in advance for your generosity in supporting my participation in Wheels for The Darling Home for Kids. I look forward to riding on behalf of all of my supporters.
My Story…
When I tell people about my new job at a children’s hospice, residential and respite center, I am usually met with a saddened and fearful look. I understand that look, I initially felt the same way when I saw the job posting. We hear about so many initiatives to treat, cure and fix – so when we hear about children dying, it can make us feel uncomfortable, scared and even helpless. But a diagnosis that we can’t “cure” certainly does not mean that there is nothing left to do.
Each day I spend with the kids I learn how they express joy – some with smiles, others with wiggles, and each with their own language. As the first Social Worker for The Darling Home Kids, it is a privilege to meet and support families on their caregiving journey. The most joyful experience for me has been making kids’ end-of-life wishes come true – these moments bring so much happiness to everyone at the Home.
This special place has become very close to my heart!

The birth of or discovery that a child has a chronic medical condition has a profound effect on a family. As parents begin the process of continuous, lifelong adjustment, they need social and community supports. At The Darling Home for Kids, medically fragile children receive care in a home-like environment, and families are supported in knowing that there is a continuum of care from respite through to palliation and, when needed, end of life care.
