Five years ago I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. This does not mean the disease process started five years ago. More precisely, it was five years ago that I was properly assessed and diagnosed. The diagnosis came as a surprise answer to why I was osteoporotic despite doing weight bearing exercise and consuming a healthy diet including calcium supplementation. The inability to absorb essential nutrients because of damage to my intestines led directly to bone density loss. The osteoporosis was detected 15 years ago, the celiac disease only 5 years ago. This lag in diagnosis needs to change and will change with better screening and testing of patients. Early detection is crucial for preventing many other health conditions stemming from nutritional deficiencies. Current research is close to discovering how susceptible individuals may avoid developing this disease in the first place. Please help the CCA fund the research required to ensure a healthy future for all.
