Cardiac arrest can strike suddenly, and often outside of the hospital: over 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest events occur in the US every year, with 100,000 taking place outside of the home. Cardiac arrest kills more people than HIV, colorectal and breast cancers, auto accidents, firearms, pneumonia and the flu, combined. AED's (Automated External Defibrillators) in public places are crucial in increasing survival rates in those 100,000 events. When used to defibrillate cardiac arrest patients, AEDs raise the chance of survival and subsequent hospital discharge from 43% to 66.5%, with overall better outcomes and normal function after the cardiac event. Help us raise money to place AED’s in public spaces around Palo Alto and the Bay Area, and to educate people on their existence and proper use!
