Course Details
A race to the Summit of the iconic and spectacular Idaho Peak and back with 1 mile vertical elevation gain/loss. The race takes place along some of the most enjoyable single track running trails in BC, old mining roads steeped in history, carved out along the Carpenter Creek and New Denver Canyons. This may just be the only mountain marathon in North America which involves using a cable car to cross a creek! Spectacular views of Slocan Lake and the Valhallas await you at the summit rewarding your effort. This route will not disappoint.
The climb out of New Denver is gentle and ‘run-able’, staying on the south side of Carpenter Creek along the old mining road of Old Sandon Road. The road deteriorates into a single track winding its way through former mining artifacts, crossing numerous creeks. Continuing onto Alamo Wagon Road, the climb pops out onto Queen Bess mining road, traversing the slope and then heading straight up to the north summit, where you will find some telecommunication towers. From here, climb your way up the rounded ridge to the fire lookout hut on the summit of Idaho Peak, having climbed a vertical mile from the start line. Stop and enjoy the 360 degree views of snowy mountain peaks, pristine wilderness and the spectacular Slocan Lake 1715m below!
Get your number checked off, and start the long descent down the well defined East Ridge route to the car park P1. Descend the main road for 3km before entering a tributary trail to connect back to Queen Bess, traverse round the northern flank to the trails of H Road, Galena Trail, then a bucket crossing to cross Carpenter Creek and back along the Lower Carpenter Creek Trail to New Denver finish where food, drink and support await you.
Route Marking: The entire route will be marked in advance using signs/arrows and flagging tape. However, it is the responsibility of the runner to know the course in advance and stay on course. Please bring the map and keep your eyes sharp for signage, flags and arrows.
Marshals/Aid Stations/First Aid/Participant Tracking: There will be volunteers with radios and first aid at each aid station, as well as a marshal will be located at both the summit and cable car crossing also with radio contact. 2 sweep runners will be following the final runners with radios and first aid. Runners will be tracked along the course using their bib number, please ensure when you pass an aid station your number is visible and marked down by the volunteer. Thank you! If you choose to not complete the course, please notify a volunteer at one of the aid stations, and a ride to the finish will be arranged. DO NOT leave the course without notifying a race volunteer or Search and Rescue could be unnecessarily dispatched!
Mandatory kit list for ULTRA runners: Water, map, minimum of two energy bars, race number clearly attached to the front of your torso, whistle, bear spray.
