My Story…
I am proud to be a part of the 2020 Connecting Champions Marathon Team! As a Pediatric Oncologist, I have seen this program do wonderful things for our patients here in Pittsburgh. The amount of support that Connecting Champions provides to patients and their families is unprecedented. The organization has approached and started friendships with greater than 90% of our pediatric oncology patients. On average, the team will spend 400 hours with each patient and their family during their cancer journey. Friendships that are established are highly individualized, and patients have been paired with mentors from 42 different professions. The amount of work that goes into pairing a patient with a professional and friend is tremendous, and the monetary cost is approximately $250 to start this new pairing. Your donation will be used to start friendships for cancer patients and families on the most difficult journey of their lives.
Description
Connecting Champions is a nonprofit that asks kids with cancer, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and connects them with a mentor for the cancer journey. Everything we do is research-based and outcomes-driven, built to bridge the developmental gap between kids with cancer and their peers.
85% of children survive cancer, but nearly two out of every three kids suffer from a serious, long-term psychosocial side effect (Koocher et al.).
We’ve paired kids, teens, and young adults with 42 different professions -- constitutional lawyers, cybersecurity experts, chefs, ghost hunters, and many in between. Through our historic partnership with UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, we’re adding a child development approach to pediatric oncology
