My Story…

I have aphasia & apraxia, language disorders that challenge my communications. Aphasia is a language disorder that affects the ability to process language, making it difficult to talk, read, write & interpret what is said, and also numbers & math. Aphasia is caused by stroke and other brain injuries. 80% of persons with aphasia had a stroke as the cause. In NS each year, there are more than 400 people who are welcomed to the aphasia community. I have made a remarkable stroke recovery! Eleven years since my stroke, I am improving my speech, reading, writing & understanding what it said. Partly, because my persistence (I am stubborn), hard work, life-style changes, support of friends & family, and my work with Aphasia Nova Scotia.

Description

Your donations will allow us to establish new Expressive Cafes around Nova Scotia for our members to meet monthly with others experiencing the same struggles at a location that is accessible to them and their caretakers.  We are also raising funds for our yearly retreat, Camp Aphas-Yak at Brigadoon Village!  So many of our members look forward to this weekend away, and with your generosity, we can provide bursaries for those who need it.
